Diverse Cultures

The name KwaZulu Natal may be a bit of a mouthful, but it accurately reflects the formation of the province; which is an amalgamation of the Kingdom of Zululand and the British Colony of Natal. KZN is also home to one of the largest Indian communities outside of India itself.

This mix of Zulu, English and Indian cultures is clearly evident in Durban, where modern shopping centres, African craft stalls, golden-domed mosques, Victorian-style buildings, fragrant spice markets and traditional healers each have their place in the sun.

Stay A While

If you've got a bit of time, KwaZulu Natal is great for an African self-drive holiday. The majority of cities and towns lie side-by-side along the coastline, linked by a national highway. Heading inland, a few hours' drive can take you from beach to big game territory. Be warned though, some of the small rural roads could have you dodging people, potholes and cows.

Scattered throughout the province you can find a wide variety of KwaZulu Natal accommodation, from luxurious game lodges with private plunge pools, to owner-run guest houses where you can't help but feel completely at home.
